ROUND 4 – Saturday 4th May – Match Report

Round 4 saw AJAX travel to face a 2nd placed Old Mentonians out at Keysborough. After last week’s loss the boys looked to get back in the winners column and kickstart their season.

In a scrappy affair it took 12 minutes for the Jackas to draw blood with Jake Lew slotting the first goal from 45 metres out. Richie Simon and Jeremy Forbes were solid in defence making sure the opposition forwards were starved of opportunities. Nico Cohen also started well getting involved in some nice rebound 50s that resulted in set shots but unfortunately the boys weren’t able to convert. Some unlucky calls in our defensive 50 saw Old Mentone grab 2 goals late in the first as AJAX went into the break down 15 to 9.

The second term saw the home team get a run on the Jackas kicking 5 goals to 1. Again, some unlucky calls and some well rewarded forward pressure saw 4 of their 5 goals scored from free kicks. Brent Shapiro came off after a heavy knock which forced Lew to go into the ruck. AJAX managed to gather the possession, but poor forward entries made it tough for the boys to get anything going. The last 5 minutes of the quarter saw the boys make better use of the footy as Aaron Bryer hit Lew on a lead putting through his second. Half time saw the Jackas down 49 to 16.

With the message to trust their forwards the boys came out hard able to match the opposition in the middle and garnered more scoring opportunities. Charles Hamilton was effective with his skills and Kane Nissenbaum worked himself into the game after a long stint on the sidelines. As the boys were able to even the contest they went into the three quarter break down 68-32.

The last quarter saw the Jackas take better care with their skills and win the quarter by a point as the rain started to fall. More forward entries led to an Alex Wollan goal and a very close snap from Olly Hoffman. The backline was able to exit effectively as the overuse of handballs was overturned. As the final siren sounded the boys had matched Mentone in the second half losing it by 2 but ended up going down 77-42.

AJAX next take on Williamstown at Gary Smorgon Oval on May 11 at 2:00PM.

This week the Jackettes played Glen Eira away, in a battle of the two undefeated teams. In torrid conditions the Jackettes were a goal down at the quarter time break. With the rain coming down and wind blowing across the ground, scoring was very difficult and whilst we had alot of the play we just came up short and lost by 7 points. Dan Abraham continued her fine form with solid contributions from I Burstin, Marget, Gabriel, Worth and I Burstin.

The Jackettes are looking to bounce back next week when they play the MCC ladies side.

Next the Jackettes are home against MCC at Lindsay Hassett Oval at 11:00 AM on May 11.
